Types of Network

TYPES OF  COMPUTER NETWORKING...

Depending on geographical extends,  networks may be classified as :

   1. LOCAL AREA NETWORK  ( LAN)
 2. METROPOLITAN AREA  NETWORK         (MAN)
 3. WIDE AREA NETWORK  (WAN)

LOCAL AREA NETWORK  (LAN)

A Local Area Network (LAN) is confined to a relatively small area. I's typically restricted to a geographic  space corresponding to a college,  constructing  or an office.

Radius of a LAN is a few hundreds of meters,  Rarely the LAN computers are more than a km apart.

In a typical LAN configuration, one or more computers are designated as the file server. The server(s) stores all software that control the network, as well as the software that can be shared by the computers connected to the network.

Computers connected to the file workstations can be less powerful than the file server and they may have additional software on their hard drives.

The server computer may be the repository of all important user files and backups are usually taken from  the server by the network administrator.

The alternative to a central server configuration is a peer-to-peer network
where network is used for only transfer of files, exchanging messages and
sharing printers etc.

Sometimes, a LAN is owned, operated and managed domestically. A LAN is more
frequently homogeneous i.e. uses the same operating.

System for all the connected computers (ports). LANS with heterogeneous operating systems (say Windows NT and UNIX) are also possible.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) covers bigger geographical areas than LAN Resembling cities.

By interconnecting smaller networks inside a big geographic space, data is definitely disseminated all through the community Giant group and authorities businesses usually use a MAN to ascertain inheritor communication.

As the communication  network is not confined to the real estate of an organization and must cross public roads and other properties, the networking medium would have to use lines leased from telecom operators or licensed microwave bands.

Physical security of communication medium is not within the control of the organization.

WIDE AREA NETWORK  (WAN)

Wide Area Networks (WANS) connect larger geographic areas covering hundreds and even thousands of kilo meters, such as the whole of India or around the globe.

Devoted transoceanic cabling or satellite tv for pc communication could also be used to attach this kind of community.

Using WAN, a computer can communicate with another computer at a distant  place. A WAN is a complex communication system. It uses complex  - communication infrastructure (both private and public) LANS, MANS, global communication networks like the Internet etc.

WANS also employ software to  hide the complexity of the underlying communication network so that to the end user, the WAN appears to be a simple extension of the LAN.
